Hi all, was grouped with some randoms for a Pel run, and they did a *very* different approach to the normal one that I see most times with kinnies/whiserwindians (everyone in engineer/officer trees, traps, and so on). It uses the vanguard line rather heavily.
Had a discussion with Hal, and we both figured it was worth looking into, and based on the information that I heard during the run and some googling, came across this guide: 6 Man Pelargir walkthrough.
Most of us tend to put our points first in the Engineer tree, then in Officer (e.g., I'm rank 6 in each). I 'm not sure that those of us who run the 6-man Pel regularly would want to spend mithril coins on unlocking the third tree. That said, we could easily retrait the Officer tree to Vanguard for the 6-man Pel then revert. If money is an issue, I'm sure we have kinnen with deep pockets who would be happy to reimburse folks who retrait.
Remember, too, that Engineer is still very useful. Would everyone need to be Vanguard? Perhaps we should test out the Vanguard tree in 2-man Pel runs and report back to this thread.

Very enlightening walkthrough and explanation of the vanguard tree. I'm currently r6 in both eng and officer so I'm thinking I will switch the officer tree to vanguard since it works best with dps classes. Good to know bear traps help as well, I'd say between the two new tactics we stand an excellent chance to grab some new plats :)
Khor, in the time running it that I mentioned in the first post, there were a minimum of two people in vanguard, with a maximum of four. I say that because I was on backdoor, and was told to stay right there. The person on the ballista was also told to stay up there as well, so whatever trees the two of us had points spent in was irrelevant.
Ok, heres a rundown of how it worked last night, as my still-sleepy brain allows.
Had two in vanguard (Roti and myself - both of us have some points in engineer as an off-spec, to get ability to set traps), everyone else was a mixture of engineer and officer. Right off the bat we ran up past the first spot where the mobs come in to the second landing on the stairs, where there's the second group of mobs. Killed those by the time the rest of the gang had caught up to us.
While waiting for the winch to get cranked up, Roti and I were on opposite sides ( he was front, I was back), and asked folks to ease up on the dps until we both had our kill meters full. Once they were full, everyone hits as hard as they like until we get past that objective. On to the first "big area" with sidequests.
One barricade went to backdoor, the rest were set up out front as usual. Had backs to the wall come up, so someone was sent to deal with that, while two people were cutting the grappling hooks along the front wall. Doing so makes the Half-troll or Sorceror come later, so we don't end up with both sidequests at once. Once the first sidequest is finished, Roti and I each dropped a bear trap at one of the two spawn points (Half-troll comes out at the doors for Backs to the Wall, Sorceror comes out to the right of the pile of whatever it is in front of the main area). Sorceror popped up where Roti was waiting, so he called everyone (with the exception of whomever was on ballista) over and popped the Vanguard skill (stunning bellow) that reduces target's morale by 25%, and as soon as I got there I hit a different skilll (rending bark), which increses incoming damage on the target. Once mine was off CD, I hit it again. He dropped like a dead fly. The rest of this area is pretty standard.
Once the gate was open to the next area, Roti ran ahead to where the small cluster of mobs shows up to "challenge" the group just before the last staging area and wiped them out to begin rebuilding his killstreak (he had to get 20 killing blows, whereas I only needed 8 to be recharged). Catapults were built by the engineers in the crowd, but only fired once each to make it a bit easier for us to regain full killstreak. Had the ship-slaves sidequest, so off 4 people went to deal with it. Khor and I stayed behind, I was cutting all the grappling hooks off again and killing mobs at the same time, Khor blitzed the mobs as well. Roti stopped on the way back from ship-slaves where the archer spawns, and I headed over to where the minstrel spawns. Each of us dropped bear-traps. Once the minstrel popped up, and everyone had clustered by him I dropped his morale by 25%, Roti used the skill to increase incoming damage, and he was disposed of with haste. Again, the remainder of this staging area is pretty standard stuff and once the minstrel is down, people can go nuts on the catpults if they wish.
Enjoy, and hope that wasn't too much of a wall of text.
